My concerns nowadays are all paint-based concerns

Deck didn't happen today; hopefully the workmen will show up tomorrow.

... we still need to finalize the paint color. There's an existing porch that has been painted yicky brown and is peeling, and a long ramp (yay, my house is accessible!) that was never finished with either paint or stain. We'll be adding a proper deck section, and then, I guess, painting the whole thing.

My house is white with ugly brown trim and roof, although I'm hoping to eventually change both of those. (I'm gonna PAINT THE ROOF WHITE. Naysayers be damned; there is such a thing as asphalt shingle roof paint, and it's way the snot more energy efficient that way. If it makes the shingle look ugly in five years, FINE; I HATE THE SHINGLE.)

House"

It looks like this, only without gardening bins blown all over the yard, and lots more flowers and shrubs and stuff now. The new deck is going in that big open area under the windows. I WANT ALL THE BROWN TO GO AWAY.

Everyone has different opinions about the color scheme of the deck. I wouldn't mind staining it, either, but I just want it all to match -- I don't want the older sections to look, well, old and ratty. I would personally be fine with white paint (or whitewash) and marine varnish. Everyone else is complaining that a white deck would look dirty too quickly, but it would also be nice and cool and pretty to the touch! You can always WASH things.

I'd say just to paint the base hot pink and the rails white, but uh, I think my aunt might have a heart attack. It'd be cute, though!

Anyone have any wooden thoughts to share with me?

Hello! I do not have any experience with painting or wood staining! But I agree that white would be pretty and nice and hopefully you live in an area where any dirt and stuff can be washed or rinsed off easily!

Gosh your house is pretty.

Eee, your house is so cute! Yes, paint your roof white. That would be so awesome.

I guess white would be a little more maintenance prone for a deck but if it makes you happy. I think white with a some dirt trapped in the lines and whorls would be interesting. Or rain spattered dust would be neat to look at before sweeping it away.

A couple of bits of advice we got when dithering about paint colors: get the samples, and hold them up during different times of day and/or in different weather. Sometimes, stuff that looks ok in low light looks dreadful in the sun, and vicey-versey. Oh, and when you have it narrowed down to a couple shades, it's fine to have the paint guys bring samples and paint little bits and take a look and compare - tends to look a bit different when it's actually up on your house vs. in a paint sample book.

Very cute house! Well ... *my* thought was isn't the varnish to not only help the wood not get damaged, but it'll also prevent the paint from getting 'really' dirty. And since you're not having a drought there - just taking a hose to your porch should do the trick!

my only concern with a white deck is that it might clash with your white house if they aren't the same white...or it might look like *too much* white with the white house and eventual white roof. maybe just a nice stain? strip the brown paint off the one old part, pressure wash it all really well and stain it all the same.
