IT'S NOT LUPUS

IT'S NEVER LUPUS

... but apparently I've got a wicked vitamin D deficiency.

Out of curiosity, what do they recommend for that? I've heard conflicting reports re: supplementation/sunshine/etc.

(BTW, I've been taking magnesium and Co-Q-10 on the advice of my doctor, and I do think they're doing me some good -- and this is from the supplement-skeptic, fwiw!)

Well, my new doctor recommending taking up sunbathing, but she, like myself, is pretty dark-skinned. The "uh yeah, protect your skin and all" seemed to be kind of an afterthought.

(That was one thing that doesn't seem to ever fit the lupus thing -- no, really not photosensitive, here! Not in the least! I just haven't been outside much because outside is usually a physical thing. But... I found exciting ways to lounge outside today.)

I have a super Vitamin D capsule she called in and I got already!

(Major points for this doctor; she doesn't mind just zapping RXes over to my CVS ~with the computer~. This is kind of why I wanted a young doctor, heh.)

Super as in I'm taking it... once a week.

I also made up little pill bottles of all the various vitamins I have lying around... I had a "dur" moment, because back when I was trying the colchicine and it seemed to be helping so much, I had also diligently made up the weekly supplies of all the various supplements, and was taking them. (And then when I ran out of the colchicine, I stopped. And crashed.)

Was the benefit and eventual crash from the colchicine, or from slamming the vitamins? My aunt is quite convinced we have FMF, but I don't know -- we'll see how just slamming the vitamins goes.

... I mean, it can't freaking hurt, certainly.

I don't feel dead today -- which I expected to after going out tonight -- and it is warm and nice today, but hm. Just too many variables, blah.

I definitely think magnesium helps me... I used to get those AWFUL leg cramps until I started taking magnesium and potassium. (Again, I try not to stretch my legs weirdly, but I haven't gotten those ones randomly while I'm sleeping that wake me up screaming or anything.)

Nobody is trying to sell me on a "cure" or "all better," but if I get decent quality of life improvement because all this year I really needed to be taking more vitamins, I will laugh hysterically and smash my head into things.

You too?

I had a vitamin D deficiency for nearly a year -- starting last year around the holidays. My oncologist put me on megadoses of Vitamin D (50,000 I.U.s) - one pill a week & I was monitored for 3 month intervals. Also I was told to drink/eat more dairy (ha ha ha ha -- not happening since I'm lactose intolerant), eat more broccoli (I think it tastes fine, but unfortunately, my stomach doesn't like it), sit out on the sunshine. So as of this past September ... my vitamin D count has finally leveled off -- now I just take Caltrate 600 twice a day.

Yeah, that's what she gave me...

Huh. I'd been avoiding dairy to see if it would help with other stuff, in addition to not going outside as much this summer. (I honestly think I'm one of the few people, even in my own family, who really ISN'T lactose intolerant, and no, cutting it out does not help anything. So I can drink it.) And I like broccoli.

Of course, I hear this as we're going into the coldest months -- but I'm going to soak up as much sunshine as possible before it snows!

I am dumb about these things. Will sun-lamps help with the Vitamin D issue, or does it have to be natural sunlight? Either way... good luck/yay I am glad that the supplements are hopefully helping!

Yes, they do! I need to get one of those. I've actually meant to for years (it's always been apparent I'm a lot more bummed in the winter) but... yeah, I kind of haven't?

I actually wonder if I could just go buy one of those full spectrum bulbs, like for lizards. And put it in the living room.

When you think that the sun is a good source of Vitamin D, this could be the most goth ailment ever.
